Spider veins are the small, branching red, blue, or purple veins evident on one’s legs, chest, or face. They are small varicose veins which play no role in your circulation. Spider veins tend to get more numerous with advancing age, pregnancy, and are more common with a family history of these types of veins. The laser can very effectively reduce or eliminate these unsightly veins. The larger, bulging bluish or purple veins that are over a quarter inch in diameter are the types of varicosities that the laser cannot treat - these need to be injected or stripped.
How Does The Treatment Work?
The laser energy is absorbed by the red pigment in your blood. The energy collapses the vein and seals it off. In the next few weeks the body absorbs the vein and it disappears. Our advanced technology minimizes the redness and bruising normally associated with traditional treatments.
Is It Successful?
The appearance of leg veins will either dramatically fade or completely disappear during the treatment. Some vessels may show temporary swelling that will subside after a few hours to a few days. The redness of the treated vessels will gradually disappear as the healing process occurs. This may take between two and eight weeks. Leg vein resolution usually takes about 8-12 weeks, with approximately 2-3 treatments needed for maximum clearance. Facial vein resolution takes up to two weeks. At the end of this process, some vessels may be gone while others may be lighter or not affected.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Most patients see excellent improvement after just two treatments. Everyone responds differently to treatments, with some needing only one treatment and others requiring a third treatment. You can optimize your results by closely following the post treatment instructions. The usual treatment interval is eight weeks.
Is It Painful?
Most people say the pulse of the laser feels like the “snap of a rubber band”. We offer all patients topical anesthetic to apply before the treatment in order to minimize any discomfort.
What Kind Of Preparation Do I Need?
Do not use any aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs, alcohol, St. John’s Wort, or Gingko products for 10 days prior to treatments. Do not use tetracyclines or Zithromax for 7 days prior to treatment. Apply the topical anesthetic 60-90 minutes before treatment, and wrap the area with plastic wrap (Saran Wrap). Do NOT use plastic wrap over the nose, mouth, or eyes.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
Leave the pressure bandage we put over the area on for 24-48 hours. wear support hose or stockings over the treated area for 3-5 days. Do not exercise for 3 days after treatment. Do not use any aspirin, ibuprofen, alcohol, or any blood-thinning medications for 5 days. Do not go into a hot shower, bath, sauna, or hot tub for 5 days.
