Facial fillers are safe and effective for correcting wrinkles, folds, and defects in the lower and upper face. The most popular types of fillers are the hyaluronic acid filler, Juvederm® and Restylane®. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugary substance which is already in the body’s connective tissue and skin. In the face, it helps maintain skin volume by attracting water molecules. The fillers are clear gels made of non-animal derived stabilized hyaluronic acid. The fillers, when injected, help the skin maintain its shape by using the body’s own moisture and drawing water into the skin, improving volume and filling in wrinkles and skin folds. As the hyaluronic acid gradually degrades each molecule binds to more water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid, until it is all used up. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide the lasting results of Juvederm® and Restylane®.
These fillers have been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 70 countries, and are approved by the FDA for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. The most common use in this country is to fill lines in the lower face, such as the nasolabial folds and “laugh lines”. They are also used for lip enhancement. Hyaluronic acid fillers generally last for 6-12 months, and regular treatments will prolong the effect.
Injections take about 20 minutes and are done with a very fine needle. Today's fillers come mixed with a local anesthetic for patient comfort. You may experience some mild redness and swelling at the injection sites for 2 to 3 days. The results are immediate, and last for about six months up to eighteen months, depending on the filler used and the area injected. The cost of treatment depends on the area being treated, and the amount of filler needed to fill the treated area. Dr. Lane will evaluate your face during a free consultation and will give you an estimate of the cost of treatment.
