Botox® and Botox® Cosmetic are products of Allergan, Inc. They are purified Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botox® has been used safely for medical treatments for many years. Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It reduces the activity of the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles on the upper face. In 2005, almost 3.3 million procedures were performed with FDA-approved Botox® Cosmetic.
Dr. Lane has had extensive training and over 9 years experience with Botox®, and is considered an expert injector by many of his satisfied clients.
Botox® has many medical uses, including treatments for spastic muscles, neurologic conditions, excessive sweating, and eye disorders. For cosmetic treatments, it is given as a few tiny injections to the upper face. The treatment takes about 10 minutes, and the effects are noticeable in a few days. The results last up to four months.
Botox® is currently FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. It is also commonly used to reduce forehead wrinkles and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. These common wrinkles result from the activity of the facial muscles over time. For people with animated faces and thinner skin, these lines become more pronounced. Both women and men are affected.
Botox® is extremely safe, but should be injected only by a physician knowledgeable about facial anatomy, and the uses, side effects, and dosing of this medication. We provide a free initial consultation with the physician. Treatment can then be scheduled. Botox® is a very fragile medicine, and must be used shortly after it is mixed by the physician, as it will lose potency with age. For this reason, we usually schedule our Botox® treatments one week per month. Dr. Lane will evaluate your facial anatomy and discuss your treatment goals with you. He will also give you an estimate of the cost based on the amount of medication to be used.
Possible side effects include headache and temporary bruising at the injection sites. You will still be able to make your facial expressions, but within a few days the frown lines will be significantly less noticeable. Subsequent treatments are recommended about every four months, as the effects wear off and the frown lines will return in time if you stop treatment.
